I am writing to thank the Edinboro University community for its generosity.
My house burned down almost two weeks ago. It was a tragic accident that left me homeless with absolutely nothing but my wallet, my car, a pair of jeans and a mock turtleneck sweatshirt.
That is not very much when you really think about the ample amount of personal possessions that many of us keep in our houses, apartments and dorm rooms.
However, what I was also left with was three very special things: the brotherhood of Lambda Chi Alpha, my family and the Edinboro community.
My family is an hour away, and even though they immediately came up to help, they do have to work, and there is only so much they can do from afar.
My brothers were immediately there for me. They gave me a place to sleep, and all the support I needed. For those who do not understand fraternities and sororities, and just think that we are “paying for friends,” that is why we do it.
It isn’t “paying for friends”; it is being a part of something, and having people to be there for you no matter what.
One of my own brothers even called the Red Cross, who immediately came to help us out.
They probably would not have been there on a bleak Sunday afternoon if it were not for one of my brothers.
What did surprise me is how the university’s community reacted. Anybody that could help out has either done their part, or at least offered. Teachers, students, local sororities, and even business owners have all made a contribution to me or one of the other people that lost a home in the fire.
I received gift cards, flash drives, notebooks, textbooks and many other needed school items, but what I received from so many people that really opened my eyes was the offer of “Hey, if you need anything just let me know. I will do what I can to help out.” Just the thought that there was a whole community that had my back is something that made a huge difference.
So I would like to personally thank my brothers, my family, the university, and the community for all the help that they have given. Thank you very much.
