Freshman Shelby Will’s goal with 24 seconds remaining in the second overtime period gave the Edinboro women’s lacrosse team a 16-15 win at Converse on Saturday.
The Fighting Scots were led on the day by a host of offensive players. Lee Ann Stickle led all scorers with two goals and four assists, Kristin Sann and Will each scored three goals and had a pair of assists. Lauren Kincaid added three goals and Abbey Mackessy scored a goal and had two assists on the day.
Edinboro opened the scoring early in the first minute of play on a goal from Sann. The Valkerries answered thirty seconds later to tie the game. The teams traded goals the rest of the half with Converse grabbing a 10-9 lead at the break. Converse added a quick goal in the second half for an 11-9 lead. Edinboro battled back to tie the game at 12 and then took a late 13-12 lead. Converse responded to send the game into overtime.
During the first overtime the teams traded goals to enter the second three-minute overtime period tied at 14-14. Edinboro’s Rebecca Zajac scored in the second overtime period but Converse again answered to tie it at 15. In the ensuing draw, Edinboro took control and Will scored the game winner with 24 seconds remaining.
“This was a great team effort,” related head coach Kevin Cooke. “We had several freshmen make some contributions in the win today. It was a tremendous amount of fun to watch these young players with this young team, grow up today. Julie McAvoy showed a great deal of composure in the net and stopped some point-blank shots to help her team be successful.”
Edinboro is back in action on Wednesday, March 17 playing against Mercyhurst.
