This past week, several members of the Edinboro Fighting Scots track and field team competed at the historic Penn Relays, held in Philadelphia. The Penn Relays are known as the oldest and largest track meet in the United States.
On the women's side, Tina Yi and Danielle Cerroni competed. Yi ran the 5,000-meter run and finished in 27th place. She ran in a field dominated by division one runners and hit a time of 17:13. That time is the fourth fastest in the conference at this point and also an NCAA provisional qualifying time. Cerroni did not finish the 10,000-meter run she participated in.
On the men's side, the team of Darren Campbell, Jason Borst, Kyle Maio and Kyle Wunz competed in the 4x400 meter relay. They finished in 47th place overall, while getting 4th in their heat. Their time was 3:19, which is the seventh best in the conference.
The rest of the team competed at Baldwin-Wallace University.
Leading the way for the men was Jordan Roose in the steeplechase. Roose ran a time of 9:29, which qualified him to run in the USA National Junior Championship.
"I ran a good first mile and then was able to hold it together during the next couple laps," said Roose.
"Coach always tells us that anyone can run the first mile so we've been working on being able to finish."
Other highlights included Scott Anderson winning the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:00 and Sean Naderer finishing sixth with a time of 4:09.
On the women's side, Yi led the team yet again with a first place finish in the 1,500-meter run. She ran a time of 4:47. Hilary Weismiller was close behind with a time of 4:50.
The Fighting Scots are winding down their season with the PSAC Championships on May 13, 14 and 15.
