Eclectic Etceteras Coffee House will host an event to raise awareness of self empowerment on Friday, April 9.

Boro Women’s Services is a collaborative Edinboro-Cambridge Springs area organization that provides free and confidential services to educate and empower individuals to make healthy and responsible choices.

Men and women are nurtured and enabled to reach their life-affirming goals through counseling and assistance.

Edinboro University alumna Erica Whiting is an artist who has used her own personal experiences to empower others through her art.
According to her artist statement, Whiting has this to say about her work:

“My work is about survival. It is not possible to pass through a life and not mark it in some way. I deconstruct the events that both scar and make us who we are while examining the walls we construct to rebuild what others have torn down...As a survivor of rape and domestic violence, I have struggled to overcome the consequences of others’ actions caused my life. Pushing the boundaries of what I know to be true about external and internal support systems, my work compartmentalizes and analyzes my life onto canvas and paper.”

During her first pass through Edinboro, while performing at Eclectic Etceteras, acoustic singer/songwriter Anne Deming bought a print of Erica Whiting's work on display at the coffee house.

A few months later, she was introduced to Whiting’s poetry via email and asked to compose music to match those words.

Several songs, many paintings and a few years later,  Whiting’s art continues to be an inspiration for Anne. Deming released her fifth CD in spring 2009.

She’s scored music for original plays, toured the continental U.S., graced the airwaves of MTV and is a favorite artist of L.A. hotspot S Factor devotees.

Together, Boro Women’s Services, Deming and Whiting would like to share their vision, their music, art and experience with the community of Edinboro.

A $5 donation will be requested at the door to benefit Boro Women’s Services.
