DC Pierson is a ‘Mystery’

“When I stuck my hand into the toilet, all the poop felt really cold and it was the opposite of what I was expecting it to feel like,” confessed DC Pierson, one of the co-writers and stars of the new comedy “Mystery Team,” which will be shown Feb. 8 as part of a special event hosted by the Edinboro Film Series.

Do not be completely disgusted, readers. No real human excrement was used in the making of “Mystery Team.” In one particular scene in the film, Pierson’s character, Duncan, the boy-genius, has to retrieve a key plot element from a bathroom using any means necessary.

“Mystery Team” is a movie not for the faint of heart, and because of that fact, Edinboro students will most likely revel in all of its vomit-gagged glory.

Do not let the upset-stomached tomfoolery fool you. “Mystery Team” is a wickedly clever film that will make you laugh so hard, your insides will nearly burst which might trigger some viewers with more irritable bowels to laugh all the way to toilets.

Enough with the poo jokes.

I loved “Mystery Team.” So much so, my hysterical laughing nearly caused me to s--t all over everything.

Okay, really, I’ve had enough with all of the poo jokes.

“Mystery Team” is a film comprised of three key ingredients: two equal parts of exquisitely executed sophomoric comedy and murder-mystery with a dash of sadistic after-school special morals that have been twisted to such crazily absurd degrees, you’d think that Amy Sedaris’s classic character Jeri Blank from the now-cancelled television show “Strangers with Candy” was supposed to make a cameo, but the scene was tragically cut out due to budgetary constraints.

(I wish she so had, by the way. Well, there’s always the sequel.)

Many familiar faces do make appearances on screen in “Mystery Team,” however.

Bobby Moynihan, who so brilliantly plays my most favorite character of the film, Jordy, the misguided convenience store attendant, is a regular on “Saturday Night Live” and will mesmerize you with his pearls of wisdom like “F--k bread!” and his ability to keep ice cream sandwiches in his apron pocket for special emergencies.

Donald Glover, who plays Jason and is one of the three writers behind Mystery Team, is not only an actor on NBC’s “Community,” he has also written for the widely acclaimed television series “30 Rock” on NBC.

In fact, the cast had to work around his intense writing schedule for the Tina Fey vehicle.

“The second-to-last shoot day had to end with Donald completely shot out of the movie, because he had to be back at work in New York the next morning at 11 a.m. It was do or die,” explained the cast in the production notes.

Pierson has some high-profile projects in the works, as well.

Random House has recently published his first novel,  “The Boy Who Couldn’t Sleep and Never Had To,” which tells the story of two teenaged best friends named Eric and Darren.

Eric confesses to his best friend Darren that he can’t sleep and this eventually leads the two on a hilarious journey of self-discovery to understand their world.

“Being a teenager is an interesting time because you are really making that transition to actual adult from being a child for so long,” said Pierson about why he chose to write a book from a teenager’s perspective.

“When you’re 17, you really want to be that strong person you’ve always thought you could be, and then you go to college. College just feels like this prolonged false adulthood. “

For the folks behind “Mystery Team,” showing the film at a college like Edinboro seemed only natural.

“[Showing our film in college towns] really appealed to us because we felt like shoehorning us into a commercial Hollywood space or treating the film as an ‘art house’ release was a mistake,” remarked the crew in the production notes.

When asked about his feelings on traveling to Edinboro for the “Mystery Team” movie event that is being organized by the members of the Edinboro Film Series, Pierson seemed thrilled that the Edinboro Hotel is going to be having $2 “MYSTERY Specials” in his honor.

“I don’t know what I did to deserve such a flattering gesture,” joked Pierson.
Edinboro is not the first place to have witnessed the “Mystery Team” crusaders.

The film had an impressive premiere at the 2009 Sundance film festival and has been picked up by Roadside Attractions, the film distribution company behind many films including the Oscar-nominated “Super Size Me.”

For the guys behind the comedy group DERRICK, “Mystery Team” was a labor of love between friends.

“Besides being professional partners who spend a great deal of our free time together, we’re also best friends,” said the film’s director, Dan Eckman.

“We are so proud of what we’ve made, and we can’t wait to show it to people.”

Pierson echoed Eckman’s sentiments.

“We just all had a fun time creating this film.
