Kieran McHugh, a male student and resident of Lawrence Towers A, was found dead in his dorm room on the morning of Sept. 14.

A meeting was held to discuss the unexpected death that same afternoon in the multipurpose room of Lawrence Towers.

President Jeremy Brown, Dean of Student Life Kahan Sablo and other university officials, clergy representing campus ministry and psychological counselors were available at the meeting, which was attended by about 80 students.

"Our first priority is [McHugh's] family, friends and fellow students," said Jeff Pinski of Edinboro University's public relations office.

Brown personally contacted McHugh's family to express his condolences and to assure his family members that the university was working closely with them to assist and support them in any way possible.

McHugh, 18, was a first-year student from Oakdale, Pa. When contacted, university police would not comment on McHugh's death in consideration for his family.

Ghering Health and Wellness Center is offering Counseling and Psychological Services (CAP) to help students deal with the tragedy.

"We work with enrolled students, services are free and confidential," said Michael Bucell, director of counseling and psychological services at Ghering Health and Wellness Center "We encourage students to make appointments." Students can make an appointment by calling 732-2743.

"If it is urgent, you can tell our receptionist and we will see them promptly," Bucell said.

If there is an emergency, students can also call university police at 732-2911.

Trained counselors and health care professionals from CAP provide a range of short-term services without charge to enrolled students.

One of the hardest thing for students in situations like this is "the shock of someone so young having passed on," said Bucell. "Individuals 15-25 are statistically less likely to die" than someone of another age group.

The regular business hours for CAPS are Monday-Friday 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
