Here we are in September, and the Edinboro community is already starting to get ready to fight bacteria-related diseases.
Not feeling well is one thing but then to have to pay the costs of drugs can be a hassle as well.
Thanks to Giant Eagle they can help alleviate the pain.
The Giant Eagle Pharmacy is offering economic aid through a free antibiotics program. It is being offered at all of the 210 in-store pharmacies.
"The Giant Eagle Pharmacy is committed to improving the health and wellness of our communities, especially during the back-to-school season when children and families begin to move indoors and become more susceptible to bacteria-related illness," said Randy Heiser, vice president of pharmacy for Giant Eagle.
The supermarket retailer is offering a 14-day supply of 10 different generic prescription antibiotics to its customers.
Of course a valid prescription must be shown to receive the antibiotic.
The antibiotics will be used to cure sicknesses such as strep throat, ear infections and pneumonia.
The following antibiotics are included in the program Amoxicillin, Ampicillin, Cephalexin, Ciprofloxacin, Doxycycline Hyclate, Erythromycin, Penicillin Sulfamethoxazole/Trimethoprim, and Tetracycline.
According to Giant Eagle's Web site, the free antibiotics program has no limit on the number of prescriptions you can fill and it covers new prescriptions and refills.
"This new free antibiotic program is expected to result in $4.6 million in annual cost savings for our customers, helping children and adults alike obtain these important antibiotics," said Heiser.
At last calculated the unemployment rate was 9.7 percent by the United States Department of Labor.
The free antibiotic program will provide some economic relief to families.
"We at Children's Community Pediatrics (CCP) commend Giant Eagle on starting this program," said Mark Diamond, a pediatrician with Children's Community Pediatrics.
Diamond also adds in a press release that a family physician or health care provider are the best people to determine if antibiotics should be used.
The CCP is a subsidiary of Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC and has a location in Erie.
Antibiotics are not effective on the common cold, but Giant Eagle does offer TopCare products to fight the cold.
The prices are competitive with other national brands.
"As consumers navigate challenging times, we are continuing to support them through our price reduction efforts that have lowered prices on thousands of offerings throughout our store," said Heiser.
