Edinboro University won the WQLN Collegiate Challenge for a third time, raising the most money for public radio among local colleges and universities.
Edinboro hosted the Collegiate Challenge, a fund-raiser program for the local public radio station on Wednesday, Oct. 28.
The challenge is held live at several local colleges and universities such as Edinboro, Behrend, Gannon, Mercyhurst, Allegheny and the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine.
Amy Neil, assistant vice president of communications on Edinboro's campus, was in charge of setting up the program.
The event started at 6 a.m. and was broadcast live on 91.3 FM from the Pogue Student Center.
Several members of the Edinboro community came together to help in the cause, including student volunteers, the Highland Ambassadors, Neil, Associate Director for University Communications Jeff Pinski and President Jeremy D. Brown.
The competition has been held annually since 2002.
The goal is not only to raise money for WQLN but also a chance for the local colleges to participate in a friendly competition with the hopes of wining trophies. Two trophies are awarded: one for the school that raises the most money and another for the school that improves the most over the previous year.
Edinboro raised $22,477 this year, a 21.6 percent increase from last year's $18,489.
But Edinboro lost the second trophy by less than 1 percentage point to Penn State-Behrend.
"We are disappointed," said Pinski. "We are a competitive college and like to crush competition."
He remains optimistic for next year and is very pleased with their win of the first trophy.
"Next year when we do this, we will win both trophies,"?he said.
With the support of Edinboro, WQLN was able to exceed their goal of $85,000 and raise $94,945.
"It shows the university can come together for a good cause such as this," said Pinski.
