Tim Hortons will be opening in the vacant Dairy Queen building this spring.

Officials in Edinboro have confirmed that a Tim Hortons and Coldstone Creamery will be opening jointly this spring at the site of the former Dairy Queen, located at 201 W. Plum Street.

According to John Groh, the building and zoning code administrator for the Borough of Edinboro, work can begin on the site as soon as the Ontario-based company submits its plans for remodel. Groh must then approve the plans and administer a building permit.

Barring any unforeseen circumstances, Groh said he will be happy to welcome the new business to town.

"There's a win-win for everybody here," said Groh. "By getting new places in here, it just shows there is interest in the community."

Tim Hortons describes itself as a "quick service restaurant chain" that serves a variety of food and drink, including coffee, donuts, croissants, bagels, muffins, pies, cakes, soup, chili, cookies and sandwiches.

Borough Manager T.J. Nemetz said such a business belongs in the Edinboro community.

"Tim Hortons will be a good fit for the borough. Their new location…will enable them to provide commuters with a convenient cup of coffee and food as they travel to and from Edinboro and I-79," said Nemetz.

Whether serving residents or college students, the decision to open a Tim Hortons store in Edinboro did not come without planning. According to both Nemetz and Groh, the company conducted research and a market study before deciding on the Plum Street location.

"They did their homework and market studies and decided it would be a good place to open a business," said Groh.

That new business means good things for Edinboro. Both Nemetz and Groh are happy to see the vacant Dairy Queen building put to use.

"We certainly welcome Tim Hortons to the municipality and wish them great success at their newest store. It is always great when a vacant business property is filled by a promising business," said Nemetz.

If administered a building permit, Tim Hortons plans to complete a full interior remodel of the site. Improvements will also be made to the exterior, and the former Dairy Queen drive-through will be used by Tim Hortons.

Tim Hortons and Coldstone Creamery could open as soon as March 2010.
