How does one sum up two years of their life? Pegasus Unicorn accomplished this with a cd.
"I think it was probably the hardest thing we've done together artistically," says singer Josiah Haughwout. "Even if it was twice as hard, it was worth it. The evidence is on the disk."
Potency will be the band's third full-length release since 2004. Mastered by Martin Atkins of Invisible Records and recorded by Edinboro alumni Andrew Todd, the sound is tight, markedly steps ahead of their previous releases.
Without exploring the many hills and valley's of each member's personal life, the years invested in this latest release saw the band through some of its hardest times. Leaves of absence, fewer shows, the entrance of new bassist Ben Roemer, culminated in what listeners can now pop in the cd player.
"I thought at times that I would never make music with my friends [again]," said guitarist Matt Shimek. "But rooted into all that is the desire to create something original and to form a product of our environment."
"Brotherhood" Shimek called it. And the "beast" that is Pegasus Unicorn lives on. The sound, though progressing with the band's lives, remains true to its otherworldly roots. Haughwout continues to deliver stunning lyrical innovations, making a mockery of clichés and twisting our emotions in a hundred directions. Bob Jensen's programming prowess still offers a metal-on-metal, raw edge. And riffs provided by Shimek and John Yochim get your body moving without realizing Haughwout's words are cutting to the quick. That's what makes the album's dynamics ready for the dancefloor or an introspective evening in your bedroom.
Listeners can get the best of both worlds when they show up at the Beer Mug on May 9, get their groove on to Pegasus Unicorn joined by Matty B And The Dirty Pickles and Cryptic Demise, then scoop the brand new album. For full details visit myspace.com/lolirockentertainment.
